The Pearl of Africa is blessed with undeniable natural beauty. In the west, the Rwenzori peaks reach towards the sky, the perfect challenge for bold explorers – Across the nation, parks are home to some of the world’s most exotic animals: Silverbacks, lions and countless others, ooh… Uganda is home to Africa’s big 5. Winding roads lead to places of grand beauty and unique cultures for those who dare to explore. There’s a story at every turn, especially from our people, who are renowned for their warmth and charm.
Kibale National Park is an attractive park in Uganda with varied tracts of tropical rain forest and a multiplicity of animals located in western Uganda slightly off the Equator. The annual temperature ranges between 14-27C and is generally cool. It is the ultimate place for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. It is known as the “primate capital of East Africa” with 13 different primate species. Kibale forest is home to more than 1,450 chimpanzee protected within its borders of 795km2 area covered. It is by far the best place to see Chimps in East Africa. The chimpanzees have been habituated for over 26 years giving you a chance to see the great apes in their natural environment. Children have to be 15 years and above to track the Chimpanzees. If younger they can opt to see chimpanzees at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary located off Lake Victoria in Entebbe – there is a raised platform where visitors can view the chimps as they come from the forest for their midday snacks.Wildlife in Kibale National Park Animals in Kibale national park chimp trekking kibaleThe mammal species in Kibale forest are estimated at 60 and include leopards, Duikers, Forest Elephants, Forest Buffaloes, Golden cats, Warthogs, and Bush Pigs. Generally animals found in the forest are shy and more aggressive maybe because of the vegetation as also because fewer people visit the parks compared to savannah parks that are usually teeming with people. On a lucky day you might sight a few Elephants, Buffaloes or Bush Pigs but normally you will only find their footprints because they tend to move away when they detect activity in the forest.
Murchison Falls National Park at 3840km2 is the largest park in Uganda ripe for exploring with safaris to this beautiful park. It is named after the Murchison falls where the mighty river Nile is forced through a narrow gorge of 7m into the ‘Devils Cauldron’ creating an ever present rainbow. Samuel Baker the explorer considered the Murchison falls as “the most important object of the entire course of the river” named the waterfall in 1864. The park is only 4 hours away from Kampala the capital and with all the attractions is a perfect destination for an exciting Uganda safari. The habitats range from forest, savanna, riverine woodland, borassus palms, and several acacia trees. It lies in the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley giving it great views of the plains and forested areas and the Victoria Nile that pours into Lake Albert. The Albert Nile Corridor is Uganda’s lowest area at 612msl at the Delta. You have opportunity to view the falls from up as the Nile squeezes through the gorge and from below while on the boat safari on Victoria Nile. The Launch trip on Victoria Nile gives you an opportunity to experience the Nile like the actors of the 1951 film “The African Queen.” Wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park Animals in Murchison Falls National Park murchison-falls-park-giraffesMurchison Falls NP has 76 species of mammals that call this their home including four of the big five. To have a complete big 5 list, you would need to pass by the Rhino Sanctuary on the way to the park.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park Rwenzori Mountains National Park has the highest mountain ranges in Africa. Its highest point lies at 5109m above sea level on Mt Stanley’s Margherita Peak which is the third highest in Africa. It lies astride the equator with six peaks and three of these i.e. Mt Stanley, Mt Baker and Mt Speke are permanently covered with snow. The park covers an area of 996 km2. . It was recognized as a UNESCO world Heritage site in 1994 and was listed by world geographic among the best hikes in the world. It lies in western Uganda about 6 hours’ drive from Kampala. Rwenzori is known as ‘mountains of the moon’ a name given to it by Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy in AD 150. Locally known as Ruwenzori, is translated as “rain maker” or “cloud-king.” The Rwenzori is not volcanic like East Africa’s other major mountains but is a block of rock faulted through the floor of the western Rift valley. The hike will take you through varied vegetation covers which include montane forest, bamboo forest, tree heath, hagenia-rapanea scrub and afro-alpine moorland. Wildlife in Rwenzori Mountains National Park Animals of Rwenzori Mountains National Park The park hosts 70 mammal species including Elephants, Giant forest hog, Rwenzori Otter, duikers, bushbucks and Leopard -but are hardly seen. Primates such as blue monkeys, Angola colobus monkey, black-and-white colobus monkeys and Chimpanzees.
The Semuliki National Park protects an extension of the Ituri forest in the Democratic republic of Congo. It is located in western Uganda on the floor of the Rwenzori Mountains. It is the only tract of true low land tropical forest in East Africa. It covers an area of 220km2 with altitude of 670m-760m above sea level. It is the only host of true lowland tropical forest in East Africa and contains features associated with Central Africa rather than Eastern Africa. River Semuliki is the international boundary between Uganda and DR Congo. The park is dominated by the eastern most extension of the Ituri forest of the Congo Basin. Semuliki National Park lies off the popular Uganda safari circuit and is thus one of the least visited parks in Uganda. Tooro-Semliki wildlife Reserve is a mix of tropical rainforest and grassy savannah intersecting with flat plains. This is Uganda’s oldest reserve and is home to both central African and East African species. Wildlife in Semuliki National Park Animals in Semuliki National Park The forest is home to 53 mammals which include; forest elephants, buffaloes, Hippos and Crocodiles along the Semuliki River and several primates – Chimpanzee, red-cheeked mangabey, Central African red colobus and many reptiles and amphibians. 11 of the mammals are endemic to the park, pygmy flying squirrel, Beecroft’s flying squirrel, water chevrotain, target rat, little collared fruit bat, bay duiker, forest buffalo, mona monkey.
Uganda is the source of Rive Nile – the world’s longest river from where the Nile starts its 4000 mile journey to the Mediterranean sea through to Sudan and Egypt. The source of river Nile is located in Jinja about 1,5 hours from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. We offer one day Jinja trips for this excursion from the city. Jinja is a hive of many other touristic activities for anyone interested in a weekend gateway from the bustle of the city including all year white water rafting, Kayaking, Jet boating, bungee jumping to kiss the Nile, Squad biking, horse riding by the shores of the Nile etc. The Nile starts its journey to Egypt from Lake Victoria in Jinja town – eastern Uganda. When you drive out to the source of the Nile, your first encounter are the beautiful gardens in the vicinity. Next is the several craft shops with mostly African pieces sourced from all over the country. You can then visit and photograph several monuments which have a historical attachment to the Nile. For example, Mahatma Gandhi requested that some of his ashes be sprinkled in the Nile after cremation along many other rivers in the world. Once on the shores of River Nile, you will take a motorized traditional boat to where the river waters ‘start’ separating from the lake waters, the spot is clearly marked with a sign post. Over the years because of several dam constructions down stream along the Nile, the water levels have increased up stream making it sometimes impossible to step on the slab by the signpost for photos. However you are still able to take them while in the boat with the sign in the back ground. In the dry seasons when the rains are scanty it is sometimes possible to step on the slab for personal photos. There is amazing scenery all along the Nile as it curves through Uganda with sections through communities where you have sightings of fishermen, gardens along the Nile and homes
So you have spent a good number of days hiking up the hills of Bwindi Impenetrable national Park on a gorilla trekking safari, you have been through the adventure of a game drive in Murchison falls National Park and still have a few days left before you leave Uganda, you can visit Lake Victoria before departing the country. Statistically it is the second largest fresh water lake coming after North America’s Lake Superior, it is the chief reservoir of the White Nile, the largest lake in Africa, and its expanse is shared by three East African countries; Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Historically, it was named after the Queen Victoria of England by an early explorer John Speke on his expedition. It however has many local names which vary from community to community; Nalubaale and Nyanza are the most prominent. What Lake Victoria can be to you however is a whole different story; one that should be personal, soothing, a calm beautiful memory that will be engraved in your mind for posterity. It can be your last stop after traversing the wildlife havens of Uganda. Its best access routes are through Entebbe town which is conveniently located near the Airport. You can take an evening boat cruise / sunset cruise to watch the sunset which will have some snacks on board. This trip takes anything from 2 hours to 3 hours. Relax and enjoy the lake as you watch the fishermen bring in their catch for the evening, locals swimming and depending on the route taken – visit the Equartor monument. Ngamba Island is a 100 acre island that is close to Entebbe and a habitat for orphaned chimpanzees that were rescued from poachers. If you did not travel to Western Uganda for chimp trekking in Kibale national park, this Island will give you an opportunity to watch the chimpanzees on raised platform as they receive their supplementary feeding. The Ssese Islands are a group of 84 islands whose essence is to offer rest and relaxation, coming as a relief to the shoulders that are weary from carrying backpacks of equipment and limbs tired from the hikes. If you crave activity during your relaxation, nature walks while munching on fresh fruit like mangoes and jackfruit, bird watching and fishing are viable options. Fishing; the lake has over 200 fish species but the Tilapia which weighs about 1-2 kilograms is the most economically important in Uganda. Your Giant catch would be the Nile Perch weighing between 10 to 80 kilograms and it is recommended that you use trolling lures for your fishing expedition. You may also visit some of the landing sites for an interaction with the local fishermen and how they go about their activities. The fishing season is usually October to March but the lake has fish all year round. Consider these items and tips as you plan your stay around Lake Victoria. The largest fresh water body in Africa and second largest in the World is home to the Ssese Islands – “the world’s best undiscovered Islands”. The lake and surrounding beaches offers a host of activities including boat trips, Kayaking, beach holidays, Canoeing and fishing. Carry some insect repellent, sunscreen given Uganda’s high temperatures usually mid-20s to late 20s degrees Celsius and a camera to preserve your memories in a single shot.
Mount Elgon National Park

Mt. Elgon is an extinct volcano that first erupted about 20 million years ago. It has the largest intact Caldera in the world measuring 40km2. It was once Africa’s highest mountain but with erosion it was reduced to its height of 4321m making it 4th highest in East Africa. Mt Elgon has the largest base in the world at 3840km2. It is also the largest solitary volcanic mountain in East Africa located in Eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya. Mt Elgon national park covers an area of 1145km2. The national park was declared a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve. The main tourist attraction is mountain hiking to the caldera with the highest peak Wagagai at 4321m, Sudek at 4303m, Koitobos at 4222m and Mubiyi at 4210m. Wildlife in Mt Elgon national park Animals of Mt Elgon national park The wildlife is mainly found in the lower slopes but rarely seen in the forest setting; Defassa waterbuck, Elephants, Oribi, Bushbucks, Buffaloes and Spotted Hyena, also black-and-white monkeys, Colobus monkeys. .
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
02
The Rhinos tread the grass in majestic grandeur, some are slow lazy steps and others are mini attempts to break into a run. They gather a mouthful of grass and chew on it gently as if to taste every straw, unaffected by tourists that lurk their sanctuary in a single file led by a ranger. You can include Rhino trekking as part of your Uganda safari to Murchison falls national park or on any of the longer Uganda tours that include gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking. To think that rhinos in Uganda became extinct because of the incessant poaching is appalling, yet the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary presents to the Rhinos what the sight of each new dawn presents to us; a second chance at life. The sanctuary sits on 70 square kilometers of land located 176 km from Kampala on the Gulu Highway in Nakasongola District toward the Murchison falls national park. Uganda was originally the home of the Black Rhino but the last one was recorded in 1982. Since the sanctuary’s establishment in 2002, the southern white rhinos have been donated by the European Union, Disney world and Kenya in 2005. This began the restoration process with the view to multiply the rhinos until they can be reintroduced into their natural habitat and thrive as they should. There are 20 rhinos so far from the 6 that were donated.
Lake Bunyonyi – Uganda
03
If you are looking for a beautiful relaxed place then Lake Bunyonyi offers just that. Lake Bunyonyi (literally translated as “Place of many little birds”) is a fresh water body located in South-western corner of Uganda near the border with Rwanda. The lake is thought to be Africa’s 2nd deepest lake after Tanganyika and one of the few lakes said to be Bilharzia free. You can request to add a visit to Lake Bunyonyi on your Uganda safari itinerary. Lake Bunyonyi is surrounded by beautiful terraced hills. These hills are terraced by the local Bakiga tribe living in this area as they carry out cultivation on subsistence level offering beautiful scenery. Lake Bunyonyi is loved by both local and international tourists and a recommended place to visit if you love water, culture, beautiful countryside scenery and relaxing moments. The lake hosts 29 Islands some of which are uninhabited and others are inhabited by locals and tourist facilities. The Islands with a rich history include; Akampene (Punishment Island), Sharps Island and Bucuranuka (Upside down).
Uganda’s Diverse Culture
04
Uganda is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. It was named the most diverse country on earth by a study from Harvard University. If you want to experience the ‘real’ Uganda then you will have to include cultural safaris on your itineraries or at least a visit to the local community either for over night stay or a few hours to explore their life, join in music and dance or simply enjoy the food. A visit to a community will give you an experience that you can never get reading or watching on TV. You can further ask for opportunities to attend some ceremonies and these can be sought out where possible. Tribes of Uganda Uganda has over 50 tribes from 3 major groups namely Nilotics, Bantu, and Sudanic groups with about 40 languages. The languages spoken are less than the tribes because some tribes share languages e.g Banyankore and Bahororo. Some of these tribes have kingdoms especially the Bantu tribes and others do not have, but operated under chiefdom’s. Currently the Kingdoms do not have political power but are majorly ceremonial. The current ‘active’ ceremonial kingdoms include Buganda, Busoga, Bunyoro and Tooro Kingdoms which have a reigning King.
Mabira forest Attractions
05
Like a coin, Mabira forest has two sides. There is the side that a passerby may see through their car or bus window; this will usually be the sight of many trees along the Kampala-Jinja highway. Behind this stretch however, is a second side, a whole different world of its own. It is flora and fauna coexisting and bringing forth the largest surviving tropical rain forest that has come to be called Mabira Forest. It has been gazetted for 84 years now since 1932 and sits on 306 square kilometers.
